Mini-Cricket is introduced to the Junior College students from Grade 1. An outsourced cricket academy provides introductory clinics on Friday afternoons for the boys. Harnessing the skills from these clinics, rotational teams are selected and these children then participate in friendly, mini-cricket matches against neighbouring schools.
Cricket is a relatively new sport at Woodlands. In 2017 the College had two teams participating in the league: Under-11 and Under-13. Both teams performed very well, with the Under-13 team retaining their ground until only being knocked out in the semi-finals. The Under-11 team won their league, beating Martin School in the final.
A major highlight of the cricketing year was the guest appearance of Proteas Cricketing legend “Vinnige” Fanie De Villiers, the South African fast bowler from the 1990s. Mr De Villiers delivered a highly motivating and inspiring talk to our young cricketers, which was followed up with a cricket clinic where his many years at the highest level of international cricket were evident for all to see. Our young cricketers came away with a sense of having been in the presence of cricketing greatness. We are certain that this cricket clinic will pay huge dividends in the future of Woodlands Cricket.
Woodlands Junior College is also proud to be associated with the Excellence Cricket Academy which provides expert coaching for our aspiring young cricketers.
