Mini-Hockey is offered in the Junior College from Grade 1. Outsourced coaches are employed for the duration of the hockey season to maintain smaller groups on the sports field. In mini-hockey our teams are mixed with boys and girls, and friendly matches are arranged for them in the afternoon. Mini-Hockey is taught during an integrated sports lesson during the school day, which is extended to accommodate the time spent on the field.
Woodlands Junior College caters for boys and girls of all age groups in our Hockey programme. Hockey is a growing sport and we make use of our own grass fields as well as the Easterns Astro-turf on occasion. We have multiple specialised and outsourced coaches who assist our own Sport staff with coaching and team management.
In 2017 the Under-11 A Boys’ team did tremendously well. They eventually gave up the ground in a penalty shoot-out in the season final. Whilst the defeat was disappointing the coaches and the team gamely notch it up to experience and add that it will just add to the motivation and hunger of the team in 2018. The Under-13 Boys’ team narrowly missed qualifying for the semi-finals by just one point in the league. Three boys were selected for the Eastern Gauteng team at the end of the season in 2017. In 2018, five boys have already been selected for the Eastern Gauteng team travelling to the Inter-Provincial tournaments in Krugersdorp and Pietermaritzburg in July. The selected boys are:
- Under-12 – Riley Sampson; Bryce Sampson; and Rantho Mathe
- Under-13 – Joshua Hutcheson-Sweet and Stelios Argyrou
We look forward to a fun and competitive hockey season in 2018.
