{"id":20,"date":"2018-01-26T10:11:52","date_gmt":"2018-01-26T08:11:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.woodlandscollege.co.za\/senior-college\/?page_id=20"},"modified":"2026-03-09T13:52:50","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T11:52:50","slug":"grade-10-subject-choice","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.woodlandscollege.co.za\/senior-college\/academics\/grade-10-subject-choice\/","title":{"rendered":"Senior High (Grade 10-12) Curriculum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p2\">Midway through the Grade 9 year, an intensive guidance programme is initiated to ensure that our students are able to make well researched and sound decisions with respect to the subjects they will study further in the Senior Phase \u2013 Grades 10 to 12.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">This guidance programme includes:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\">Investigative research in life orientation for career choice<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Parents information evening<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Information on tertiary study options<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Consultations with students and parents to develop a personal schooling plan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\">The Senior Phase of the Senior College incorporates the Grade 10, 11 and 12 years. In each subject, these three years critically assimilate content and skills so that the student is sufficiently prepared to write and pass their National Senior Certificate Examination (Matric). At Woodlands International College, though, we strive to ensure that each and every one of our students does more than merely pass Matric. The underlying philosophy of our approach is to ensure that all of our Matrics perform at a level that allows them to be accepted into the tertiary studies of their choosing. It does not stop there, however. We take great pride in the fact that our students not only get accepted into leading colleges and universities both in South Africa and abroad, but that they achieve at the highest level in these institutions. In order to do this, we prepare our students to not merely sit and pass an exam \u2013 instead, we prepare them for life beyond Matric, and for success as a global citizen in an ever shrinking world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">A diverse curriculum is offered for the IEB FET Phase, culminating in the final Matriculation examination and National Senior Certificate. The standard requirement for the IEB National Senior Certificate is seven subjects, with students making a further election from additional offered subjects:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>Core Subjects (four) <\/b><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\">English (Home Language)<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Afrikaans or isiZulu (First Additional Language)<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, with the option to register for Mathematics through the Mathematical Literacy project in Grade 12<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Life Orientation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>Elective Subjects (three) <\/b><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\">Accounting<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Business Studies<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Computer Applications Technology (CAT)<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Engineering, Graphics &amp; Design (EGD)<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Further Studies in Mathematics*<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Further Studies in Physics*<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Geography<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">History<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Information Technology (IT)<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Life Sciences<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Physical Sciences<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Visual Arts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\">*Further Studies in Physics and Further Studies in Mathematics are not part of the three electives.
