Since its humble beginnings in 2004, Hockey at Woodlands International College has developed into the most popular – and one of the most successful – sports in the College. We have two boys and two girls teams, each of which are competing at the highest level in their respective leagues.

The phenomenal growth in the sport was sparked by the beauty of the game and the dynamic, friendly camaraderie of the talented players. Hockey offers the opportunity for growth as both an individual player and also as a team player. In addition to Field Hockey, all of our teams are also playing Indoor Hockey and also excel at this fast-paced, exciting form of the game.

League successes in 2017

  • Under 15 Boys:
    • Runners up of the Eastern’s School Hockey League B Section
  • First Team Boys:
    • Winners of the Eastern’s School Hockey League B Section
    • Unbeaten in the Eastern’s School Indoor Hockey League
  • Under 15 Girls:
    • Played in the Eastern’s School Hockey League
    • Played in the Under 16 Eastern’s School Indoor Hockey League
  • First Team Girls:
    • Played in the Eastern’s School Hockey League
    • Played in the Under 18 Eastern’s School Indoor Hockey League

Provincial successes in 2017

  • Eastern Gauteng Colours for Field Hockey:
    • Milla Mandic; Marcus Cordeiro; Zenande Majola; and Daniel Ralph. Marcus Cordeiro captained his Under 13 Eastern’s team
  • Quagga’s Provincial Colours for Indoor Hockey:
    • Daniel Ralph; Dante Montalbano; Lethabo Montalbano; Matthew Ralph; Demi Rutherford; Angelica Montalbano; and Shae-lynne Henderson
  • Action Hockey Colours:
    • Although run privately, five of our boys – Dante Montalbano; Marc Dingle; Grant Ferreira; Liam Andrews; and Matthew Ralph – were in the provincial team that won the Under 23 Men’s National Action Hockey Championships in August and held in Pretoria. They also finished 3rd overall in the Men’s Under 30 Section (Grant Ferreira – Captain; Matthew Ralph – Vice-Captain; Dante Montalbano – Goalkeeper; and Matthew Ralph – top goal-scorer of the tournament). Two of our girls – Demi Rutherford and Angelica Montalbano – made the Under 23 Mixed Team

Tournament successes in 2017

  • Junior Boys and Senior Boys were winners of the Edenvale Summer League Tournament
  • Senior Boys won the Bronze medal at Aitken Senior School’s Hockey Tournament
  • First Team Girls and Boys both won the Woodlands Open Day Tournament

League successes in 2019

  • U15 boys finished 8th in the Eastern’s School hockey promotion league.
  • 1st team boys finished 2nd in the Eastern’s School promotion league
  • U17 girls finished 5th in the Eastern’s School Hockey league
  • 1st team girls finished 2nd in the Eastern’s school hockey league

Mikayla Rathbone was selected for a select team that went to the USA, while there she was scouted

  • 1st team boys and girls hockey teams took part in the open day Woodlands tournaments.
