In every sporting season, there is a part of the journey that often goes unnoticed — the quiet moments before the whistle blows. The simple bus ride to a fixture becomes a space where friendships form, nerves settle, team spirit grows, and our athletes share not only a destination, but also a dream.

This year, our Senior College sports programme has been a reflection of that journey. It has been filled with preparation, determination, resilience, and moments of triumph. Across every code, our athletes have shown remarkable growth, commitment, and pride in wearing the Woodlands badge — and it is with great admiration that we celebrate their achievements.

Athletics 🏃‍♀️

The year began with an unforgettable start at the Inter-High Athletics Meeting, where our athletes displayed exceptional spirit. Our U19 boys delivered an outstanding victory in the 4x100m relay, and Woodlands placed 5th overall out of 11 schools.

At the Greater Boksburg Meeting, two of our athletes advanced to the D6 Championships — a testament to their hard work and potential. The season ended with pride and promise, and the foundations for even greater success in 2026.

Basketball 🏀

Basketball continues to grow rapidly at the College. From two teams in 2024 to four teams this year, participation and enthusiasm are at an all-time high.

The U14 boys were standout performers, impressing both spectators and directors. Their growth led to the installation of new hoops and our very first home game in the Woodlands indoor facility — a proud milestone for our College.

Swimming 🏊

Our swimming squad doubled in size, and their results followed suit. Across four galas, our team finished 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, and eventually 1st — closing the season with a well-deserved victory.

Despite the Inter-High being rained out, the swimmers’ commitment never faltered, and the leadership from Mrs Pain was exceptional.

Netball 🏐

In our final year in the D13 League, our netball players demonstrated outstanding perseverance amid a challenging fixture schedule.

The 1st Team girls delivered one of our most improved seasons, jumping from a 20% win rate in 2024 to an impressive 50% in 2025. Their spirit and teamwork have set a strong foundation for the years ahead.

Football ⚽

Football remains one of our most passionate and high-performing programmes.

U14 & U15 Teams

  • The U14s gained valuable experience at the Woodlands U14 Festival.
  • The U15s had another exceptional season with consistent performances, two semi-final finishes across two different leagues, and a strong showing at the St Stithians Challenge Cup — where they bravely stepped up an age group.

Their success speaks to their discipline, talent, and unity.

1st Team

The 1st Team started strongly in the Easterns League and went on to participate in major tournaments including:

  • Steyn City Tournament (Plate Finalists)
  • St Peter’s Festival — our strongest finish in recent years

Across all divisions, Woodlands achieved more than a 40% win rate this season, with the U15s leading at above 55%.

Hockey 🏑

Our 1st Team boys made the transition from U16 champions to U19 competitors — a challenging but inspiring journey. The highlight of the season was Leano’s selection to the Easterns U18 provincial team for the fourth successive year.

Our girls’ hockey team doubled their fixtures and celebrated an outstanding season, producing provincial players in Peyton and Eleni.

Derby Day 2025

This year’s Derby Day against Pecanwood was one of our most memorable yet.

Our cheerleaders set the tone for the day, showcasing unmatched spirit, and our teams delivered exceptional performances across all codes.

Woodlands will proudly host Derby Day in 2026 — and preparations are already underway, including the introduction of new trophies recognising excellence in cheer, culture, and combined sports performance.

Golf ⛳

Our golf squad grew from four to six players, all showing tremendous dedication throughout the season. Representing Woodlands at the Junior Masters at Serengeti, our golfers carried themselves with professionalism and composure.

Next year, the squad will travel to Sun City for the Westville Boys’ Championship — an exciting milestone for the team.

Cross Country 🏃

Under the leadership of Mrs Brooks and Mr Van Wyk, our runners trained with passion and consistency. Nine athletes qualified for D6 Championships, two advanced to Gauteng Championships, and Tatum represented Woodlands at nationals — an exceptional achievement.

Girls’ Football & Tennis ⚽🎾

Our girls’ football team gained valuable experience across multiple leagues and tournaments, supported throughout by their male counterparts — a true reflection of Woodlands unity.

Our tennis girls enjoyed a strong debut season, going unbeaten in their league group and securing impressive results at St Peter’s.

Rugby & Cricket 🏉🏏

This year marked the exciting introduction of Rugby Sevens to the College. Cricket will officially launch next year, supported by growing interest and inspired by our national heroes — including our very own future Protea, Keira Ferreira.

Closing Reflections 🚍

The true essence of sport is not found only in medals or scoreboards, but in the everyday moments — the camaraderie on the bus, the determination after a loss, the laughter shared between teammates, and the courage to keep showing up.

To our athletes, coaches, and parents:

Thank you for riding the journey with us.

Your passion, your resilience, and your spirit have shaped an unforgettable 2025 sporting year.

We look forward to keeping the wheels turning — all the way into an even brighter 2026.

Warm regards,

Mr. Sphe Nala
