From the Head of Culture – Junior College

As we reach the end of 2025, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the incredible cultural year we have enjoyed at Woodlands. Our Junior College students have once again reminded us that the arts are not just activities—they are the heart of creativity, confidence and connection in our school.

This year began with our vibrant Annual Eisteddfod, where we welcomed five visiting schools and celebrated an inspiring range of talents. From poetry and prepared readings in English, Afrikaans and IsiZulu, to vocal, instrumental, choir, marimba and creative arts performances, our children shone with courage and passion. Their success continued at the Teatro, CBC and Benoni Eisteddfods, where many of our students achieved exceptional results. A special highlight was the number of medals earned at the prestigious Benoni Eisteddfod, a remarkable accomplishment considering the scale of participation across Ekurhuleni.

We also hosted two wonderful public speaking events this year. Our very own Soapbox Event welcomed six visiting schools and showcased the confidence and clarity of our young speakers. At the Chatterbox Event hosted by CBC Boksburg, our students once again represented Woodlands with excellence, grace and maturity beyond their years.

One of the most memorable highlights of 2025 was our Junior College production, “The Groove Awards,” presented by Grades 1 to 3 and led by Mrs Short. Over three magical evenings, our children captivated the audience with energetic choreography, classic hits and their unforgettable smiles. It was a celebration of joy, teamwork and pure Woodlands spirit.

Our Annual Music Recital continued to grow in strength, showcasing the developing talent of our vocalists and instrumentalists. In addition, our cultural clubs—from SCA and Eco-Club to STEAM, Arts and Crafts, Digital Art, Choir and Marimbas—remained vibrant spaces where students could explore, innovate and express themselves creatively throughout the year.

As we celebrate the achievements of our award recipients, I extend my deepest thanks to our dedicated teachers, supportive parents and, most importantly, our incredible students. Your enthusiasm, hard work and wholehearted participation have made 2025 a truly outstanding year for culture at Woodlands.

I look forward to an exciting and inspiring 2026 as we continue to nurture the cultural heartbeat of our school.

Warm regards,

Head of Culture, Junior College

Mrs Jackie Lucas
